Power Outage? Here's What to Do

Karla Williams • July 14, 2026

Power outages can happen unexpectedly, especially during periods of extreme heat when electricity demand is at its highest. While most outages are restored quickly, knowing what to do ahead of time can help keep you and your household safe.

Check the Status of the Outage

If your power goes out, first determine whether the outage is affecting only your apartment, only your building or the surrounding neighborhood.

For updates on outages and estimated restoration times:

LADWP provides real-time information on active outages, repair progress, and estimated restoration times.

During the Outage

  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to help preserve food.
  • Unplug sensitive electronics or use surge protectors to prevent damage when power is restored.
  • Use flashlights instead of candles whenever possible.

Be Prepared

LADWP also offers a helpful guide with emergency preparedness tips, food safety recommendations, and additional resources for extended outages.
